How Do You Install a Split Air Conditioning System?

When you live in an area or geography, which has hot climate round the year or even for most part of the year, having air conditioning no longer looks like a luxury which you crave for. It becomes a necessity. If you do not have a window sill, install a window A/c then the next best option is to install a split A/c system.

The advantages of this are that each unit can be controlled and operated independently and air comfort is given only where it is needed. These are also good to be installed in places where there is limited space. These A/cs come in different energy saving as well as cost saving models and they have an array of different styles and colors as well. They are silent as compared with other air conditioners but the disadvantage is that they cool a limited space. At the most they cool are 2 rooms though normally they are used for a single room.

Installing a split system consists of a number of steps which have to be followed in the correct order.

  • The first step is positioning of the blower and evaporator unit. The bracket is to be mounted and then the location for the compressor is needed outside. The wall penetration is needed for the refrigeration line as well as the water condensate line.
  • The compressor unit is to be installed and the lines are to be connected and the vacuum on the lines needs to be pulled. After the compressor unit, has been installed outside, the refrigerant lines have to be connected by use of a spanner and other tools. The connections are made at the compressor unit as well as the blower and they need to be tight and secure however, they should not be so tight that the threading gets damaged. The excess tubing is to be cut and the ends should be reflared so that the nuts can be used again.
  • Alternatively, the excess tubing can be looped behind the unit of the compressor. The vacuum pump is to be connected using the manifold gauge to the compressor’s port and a low-pressure gauge valve is to be opened. The blue low pressure hose goes to the compressor unit and the yellow one is connected to the vacuum pump. The vacuum needs to be pulled for around 30 minutes to evacuate the vapor from the copper lines and after that the electronic grade solder is to be used to seal the nuts which are on the end. This way there will not be any leaks and the life of the system will increase. For this, a propane torch can be used to heat the nuts and for the solder to be applied and melted into the threads as well as the spaces. This is done after pulling of the vacuum.
  • After this, pressure is to be applied and then electrical connections are to be made.   The valve for the low pressure gauge needs to be closed and the liquid line valve should partially be kept open. The gas valve is to be opened fully and this will allow the manifold gauge to register pressure. The vacuum pump can then be removed. The manifold then needs to be quickly disconnected from the compressor unit due to the fact that oil and the refrigerant will spurt out. However, a word of caution in this regard- if the manifold is removed without pressure in the lines, the vapor will get sucked back in the lines. After this is done, the liquid line valve is to be opened fully. The electrical connections are to be made both inside as well as outside. This perhaps is the easiest of all steps.
